Hello! I’m back again with another artist special.

I couldn’t write articles on artists without mentioning this amazing artist and his amazing body of work. SG Lewis. He is a producer, songwriter, and musician. He is also a hilarious man. I would LOVE to be friends with him in real life (hit me up yeah Sam?).

I recently showed one of my friends “Hurting” by the man in question and AlunaGeorge, and she has not stopped playing it since. I felt like such a proud mum. SG Lewis is one of those artists that once you start listening to him you just want to tell your friends.

I was once of those people. My best friend introduced me to SG Lewis around 3 years ago, when his discography mainly consisted of ‘Warm’ and the ‘Yours EP’, we’ve come a long way since then, and I’ve enjoyed every single minute of it. She played ‘Warm’ and ‘Yours’ to me and I hooked from the offset. I actually did a cover of Warm last year for my project at uni, I might rerecord it and post it, but what a weird way to come full circle.

I find it hard to put his music into a specific genre due to him dipping in and out of a lot of genres and working with a lot of artists from a wide range of genres. However, most of his music consists of synths, arpeggiations, and a good bass-line. All of the things that lie close to my heart. Some of the tracks have him on vocals, like ‘Warm’ and ‘Yours’, however, as I mentioned, he often features lots of other artists on his music thus experimenting with different genres, such as JP Cooper on ‘Shivers’, Col3trane in ‘Smart Aleck Kill’ and Kamille in ‘Easy Loving You’, to name a few.

Oh yeah, he also produced wrote track 7 'Hallucinate' on Dua Lipa's upcoming album with Frances, Dua Lipa and Stuart Price, with vocal production from Lauren Delia, as well as frequent DJ sets around the world. He truly does not rests.

His most recent body of work has been 3 EPs which are based around the stages of a night out: Dusk, Dark and Dawn, which he captures perfectly in each.

During Dark, (particularly in Again and Hurting), you can really picture the stage of a night out, when you’re surrounded by your friends in a club (I hear house music, like in Again), dancing, and having a good time.Dawn definitely has that ‘the morning after’ or the ‘afters’ vibes, particularly the second half of ‘Blue’ when the sun has just come up and you’re still up after a night out, but barely awake. You can also sense the reflection felt after a night out during ‘Easy Loving You’, which is quite an easy listen, perfect for a hungover day, when you really are in your feels.

It’s hard for me to pick my favourite, but I’d have to say Dusk, just because of how often I’ve listened to it. Also, Coming Up and Aura are perfect for a pres playlist to get everyone in the mood.

SG Lewis was the reason I started to get into Clairo. I was (and still am tbh) obsessed with ‘Better - SG Lewis x Clairo’, it’s not part of the Dusk, Dark, Dawn collective, but came out in between the ‘Dawn’ and ‘Dark’ EPs.

His songwriting, production aesthetic, techniques intricacy, melodies, lyrics are the reasons I would shout about everyone listening to SG Lewis every day of the year. There really is something for everyone. Some of his songs are instrumental, if you prefer not to listen to vocals. Also, if you’re the kind of person that loves remixes, he does that too don’t worry!

My highest recommendations are; Warm, Yours, Better, Aura, Smart Aleck Kill, Sunsets (pt 1 & 2), Shivers...I could go on honestly, it’s very hard not to, but if you're also a very big fan of a good bass line, make sure to give 'Hurting' a listen, and thank me later.

Please do drop me a message if you give SG Lewis a listen and let me know what you think, or tag me in a pic of you listening to him, I'd love to know how many more fans I create haha.

I should also mention he is such a hoot on instagram and twitter and I'd recommend following him even if his music isn't for you, he never fails to entertain me. This is a really important part of fan interaction I think though, and I support him no matter what just because of the kind of person he comes across as (and that's the genius of branding!).

Please check back soon though for another article on something very different next time though!

Nice speaking to you,

Sabrina
